Wow, this got a little off topic but I'm fine with that. I would like to add a little about reel seat placement...
To me, the advantages of reel seat placement to improve on a rod's intended purpose far outweigh the advantages of a distance increase. Here's a specific example, I've built several rods for kayak fishermen. A rod with too long of a handle can be virtually useless in that situation. Though addaed casting distance means less maneuvering, it is not worth the tradeoff to sacrifice comfort and useability. I'm also not sure a longer handle means a longer cast. As long as you have enough energy to put in at the handle end of the lever and overcome the weight, then a shorter handle would mean more speed at the other end = longer cast. I think this makes sense. Thanks for the replies everyone, Steve Re: Casting distance

Steve,
As Tom suggested, design and build your rods to be the best overall rods possible. i.s. light weight, well balanced, good handle position, comfortable handles, and the correct guides and tips for the overall rod. As with any thing in life - compromise and balance in ones life is as important as it is with a fishing rod. Do the best job you can to make the best overall fishing rod, and both you and your clients will be pleased. Take care Roger Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
