Trying to finish my first attempt at a birch handle with some wood accents. I plan to overbore the handle and use a foam arbor to get a good fit on the blank (5 wt sage tcx). My question is how thick does the birch and/or wood need to be? was intending to bore to 9/16th and insert the arbor but at it thinnest points the birch bark wall would just under 1/4" thick (maybe closer to 3/16"). is this wall too thin? i imagine that being epoxied to the arbor give a lot of strength but don't want to risk a grip failure if its too thin to be safe. as always, thanks for the help Re: Birch Handle help

If it's supported from underneath then it really doesn't matter how "thin" it is. It will simply have to possess sufficient wall thickness to allow you to sand the shape and contours without your coves or wells getting down into the foam portion.

Be VERY careful boring/reaming birch bark grips as they have very little lateral strength until mounted.
If you don't you'll break it sure as shoot'in! Raymond Adams Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it.. Re: Birch Handle help

My last couple of grips I bored out to 16mm and smallest OD on the grip is 23mm. This works out to roughly 3.5mm thickness of birch per side which is just over 1/8". Your email is hidden. I can send you some additional info if you need it. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
