Lathe Motor Troubles

Last year I bought a Turncrafter Pro lathe with variable speed. It has run like a champ until a couple days ago when the motor turned off on its own. I hit the re-set button and the motor started up again, ran for awhile, then it quit.

I checked the outlet and cord. I opened the variable speed case and gave a look at the connections...all tight and nothing charred.

The motor now barely turns.

Any ideas on what it is?

Les

My guess without looking at anything but by your description is almost a 100% seized bearing

I bought the same lathe two months ago. It worked for two weeks and quit. It turned out to be the variable speed control box. If you check out customer reviews on Amazon for this lathe there appears to consistent problems with the controller. It took me two weeks to get a new controller but ifLinda from PSI got involved earlier it would have been resolved faster.

I had something similar with the smaller turncrafter. Stopped suddenly after working very well. There are copper brushes in the motor that I adjusted to make contact. As I recall I stretched them out. My Pro is at home so I can't look at it to see if it has the same setup as the smaller lathe.

Thanks everyone!

I called a small motor repair shop here in KC and after I described the troubles the man said it sounded like the control box and not the motor. I read where you've had similar issues, Keith.

I have an e-mail sent to Penn State and I will call their service hot line, too.

I want my lathe back in order! I've got the turning Joneses!
