Hay guys:

With a Ambassadeur 6500 cast reel, guides on top, what do you guys think is a good size for the butt guide. I was thinking of a 12 high frame ?? About 17 lb line

I use that reel with a 7' rod and I might use 15 to 20 lb line depending on the specie of fish. but on those rods I use a size 16 stripper guide from the Fugi NSG.series. Hope this is some help

I personally don't see any need to go bigger than a 12 for a butt guide with a 6500. I would use a SV type frame instead of a UD because it's a little higher. I would also sit it out about 21 inches or so and take a long look at the line path before I nailed it down.

Bill,

Just throwing this out there. Remember all those discussions about micro's and how the first "guide" the line see's is the one mounted to the reel that goes back and forth on the pawl? JMHO, but I wouldn't see the need for anything larger than a 10 or 12 as the butt guide. I'm with the other guy's with mounting it 20 - 24" in front of the reel.
