Does anyone have a diagram or photo of how to install a switch on a sewing machine motor to reverse its direction?

Thanks in advance!

Barry,
It may or may not be easy to reverse the direction of the particular sewing machine motor.
Typical sewing machine motors are series wound brush driven ac motors.
In order to reverse the motor direction of ac series wound motors, you need to be able to get to the motor brush connections as they connect to the armature windings on the motor.

Then, to reverse the motor direction, you simply cross wire these brush connections as they connect to the armature wires by wiring in a double pole double throw switch with the ends of the switch crossed over to effect a switch.

The problem with some motors is that the brush - armature connections may be buried internally in the motor. If so - you are essentially out of luck.
However, if the brush connections and armature wiring connections are on the ends of the motor where they may be accessed - you may be able to rewire the motor.

You need to cut these connections, and then solder or crimp pigtail wires on these wires to the outside of the motor.

Then, wire in the switch and you will be good to go.

Note:
Here is an example of a commercial replacement motor that Dayton uses for its right angle drives. These motors are designed from the beginning to be reversible. i.e. All 4 wires - the two brush wires and the two armature wires are extended to the outside of the case. Then, it is only necessary to connect the correct wires together for a permanent motor direction, or through a switch for a switchable motor direction.

I have built several power wrappers using the entire right angle gear motor system, of which this motor is part. The only issue with the system, is that the gears are noisy. After a few hours, the grinding of the gears is quite irritating in the quiet rod building shop.
That is why I only use these right angle wrapper systems for some heavy duty turning that I want to do. i.e. the gears in this system are very robust and the final drive is a 1/2 inch shaft, so that there is plenty of torque to turn what ever is needed at a nice low rpm.

I beleive there is a wiring diagram in the photo section. Try a search there too.

read a post that mentions dc motors instead of sewing machine motors. What are the pro's and cons?
