I have a section of a bamboo rod in for repair. The rod is missing a guide and I have no idea what the guide is or where to find it. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. [www.rodbuilding.org]

Hi Scott,
The guide you have is called a trumpet, or bell guide. Used primarily from about 1880 to 1930. Most of these were used on bait casting rods rather than fly rods - bait casting rods in that time frame were typically 8 1/2 to 10 ft. long (the Henshall pattern from the early 1880s was 8 ft. 3 in.). Some manufacturers, such as Horrocks-Ibbottson, made the grip with a female ferrule at each end, so that it could be used with the reel above the hand as a bait-casting rod, or below the hand as a fly rod. Most true fly rods of that time used a loose ring guide, like a modern loose ring hook keeper. If you could get me some dimensions (i.d and overall length), I'll root around and see if I've got a match. Best Regards, Pete Appel Re: Need help finding a fly guide
