i am building my 2nd freshwater pole and i will eventually build my saltwater seeker. i was told that an underwrap is a good idea for salt but what about freshwater. my rod is a casting rod this time but i will use it for squid fishing. if i dont use an underwrap will the blank make a flat spot on it from the guides rubbing on it and eventually break? is an underwrap overkill for freshwater?
Thanks Greg Re: do i really need an underwrap?

Underwraps are purely for decoration if you prep your guide feet correctly. I use them sometimes on my saltwater rods just because I like the look. I also do "fake" underwraps sometimes too. It basically is personal preference but I would avoid it on very light rods as to not impact the performance. Re: do i really need an underwrap?

I would on a heavy salt rod (well I do on all salt rods personall choice) but freshwater keep it as light and as simple as possible
On the other extreme would you completly wrap a 5wt fly rod in E thread with underwraps then two thick coats of highbuild?? Match to the blank A thread is plenty strong enough but some people like C or D Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
