I have an old white fenwick surf blank and when put together and shaken, you can feel a slight clicking in the ferrule. The bottom part of the female is snug but the innard is loose. I tried cutting, the thing is I messed up first and read wrong or something, and I cut off from the male end about an 1/8". I realized the cut was supposed to be on the female part, and cut about an 1/8" off as well. The ferrule connection feels a tad better but still a knocking feel. Should I cut more from the female end? I feel if I cut too much, the connection wont be so deep as I already cut an 1/8" off both sides. It seems that the male part goes in only about an inch or so. I even tried a tiny amount of masking tape on the male end to help fill in the gap. It did not do much. Is it pretty much a lost cause? Just a bad ferrule/blank?

You made a bad mistake by trimming the wrong end of the ferrule. Just to get back where you started, you have to then cut the female end which has shortened the amount of overlap.
Another cut from the female end would be the proper fix. Provided you have enough overlap left, this would be the way to go about restoring the fit. Remember you can always trim more, but you can't put any back on, so take off just 1/8th inch or at a time until the fit is restored. ............ Re: Loose Ferrule

If the looseness is up inside at the top of the male end, which is what I understand from this, then you need to trim the female ferrule.

If you are worried about it getting too short and the ferrule is not so loose that it flies off when casting, try a little beeswax on the top of the male section. That may be enough to stop the clicking. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
