For those of you who have painted blanks -

What have you found to be the best top coat (without a spray booth or expensive equipment)?

None? Clear coat? Permagloss? Rod finish?

Want to keep weight and increase in blank diameter as minimal as possible and also duability - don't need a lot of chipping/flakes.

Also... duplicolor (car paint?) vs. the Krylon for plastics (I think that's the one I saw listed as being used)... likes/dislikes?

I want even less weight involved. Ink is heavy stuff...

I have used Krylon for Plastic AND Plasti-Kote with good results. My top coat of choice is Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane Clear Gloss. I use a homemade "spray box" and a PacBay dryer for turning.

Permagloss unless the Lumaseal is any good ???

If you go to an automotive paint supply store they will set you up with a can of clear coat, can of reducer, can of hardener and a little bit of flex additive for obvious reasons and that will by far be the most resiliant top coat possible. I am about to change over to this method. This stuff is crazy gnarly though and you need a recpirator and any type of sprayer should work. Hope it helps.

Alex....Being a builder that goes a ways back I have used them all... and I , like Jim Gamble, think that Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane is the tops and also real "PURDY"

I use the Duplicolor for color coats and adhesion promoter primer. you want to use light coats and after the paint sets I lightly wet sand with 800 to 1200 grit. I have used a whole bunch of coatings and can tell you that most out of can stuff won't look or last. Spar will yellow the color slightly and most others just don't hold up. I have recently been testing a coating that comes in a spray can form but... Is a 2k ureathane. This stuff so far is fantastic. I have painted reels with it, Rod blanks and carbon grips. It's seems tough, high gloss and is flexiable. It's not cheap But basicly it's a true 2 part auto finish that any auto shop can get in quarts and spray with a gun. I would never paint a blank that cost more then $20 with krylon or any enamel or so called can epoxy spray. It's not worth it!!
