The various types of substances that we use such as the above as well as epoxy, varnishes etc have to be cleaned up and thinned from time to time. Is there a ready source for info on this ?

Tru-Oil cleans up well with mineral spirits (paint thinner) but should not be thinned. Epoxy cleans up with Alcohol while still wet, but not after it has set. Don't know about the other two. Re: Thinners for Hard as Nails, Tru Oil, U-40 rodfinish

Although Alchol will clean epoxy to some extent, and is safer - a much better cleaner for epoxy - especially if it has hardened a bit is Xylene.
However, Xylene is much more toxic than Alchol and needs to be used with appropriate amounts of ventilation. It is also a good idea to wear gloves to keep the Xylene from being absorbed through the skin. Of course this holds for the other chemicals as well. Most of the things that we use to clean, finish, coat and thin - can be absorbed through the skin to some extent. Although ackward to use, the use of gloves - latex or neoprene - prevents absorbtion into the skin. Then for any of the evaporative chemicals that we use, appropriate venting should be used, or rebreather maskes should be used to prevent lung absorbtion of the chemicals. Be safe I just finished burying friends who have died from Lung Cancer so you can't be too safe. Roiger Re: Thinners for Hard as Nails, Tru Oil, U-40 rodfinish

Thanks for the input. I am new to the forum but I thought that I had seen some earlier postings that alluded to the use of diluted Tru-oil and Haley Hansen's hard as nails. I am refinishing some old Bamboo rods and having done only graphite rods previously, I was eager not to screw op via my solvent choices.
Again, Thanks, Buddy Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
