Fly stripper question

Building a bamboo switch rod, and I find that locating my stripper at 31-32" from butt end of reel seat, puts the stripper right in the middle of the metal ferrule. If I put it before the ferrule (looking from the butt) it ends up 28.5" from reel seat. If I locate it past ferrule, it sits at 33". I plan on testing, but generaaly speaking, where should I locate the stripper?

I'd tape things up and go out and try it both ways. If you move it too far forward (and I'm not sure that 33 inches is really too far) you may have trouble picking up the line from the stripper without reaching forward too far. You'll just have to try both positions and see which suits you. I don't think casting will be overly affected, although at 28 inches I might opt for one ring size larger than what you had planned on using.

Place the stripper guide 29% of the distance from the reel to the rod tip.
This takes into count shorter rods or two hand rods and switch rods.
Also works for spinning and casting rods.

On a longer rod that would put the stripper WAY out there!! I think reel size matters more than rod length. The line does not know how long the rod is but knows the distance from reel to stripper?

George, try a little "formula" I use. Measure the distance from the point of your elbow to the tip of your longest finger when your arm is placed in front of your body forming an L shape. Add 10 inches to this measurement. Your total, in inches, is the distance from the center of the reel seat to your stripper.

Good info Carlos. My arm when held that way is twenty inches to the tip of my longest finger. Add ten more gets me thrity and since the reel seat is four if I were to add back one half of that it would put me with a butt guide located 32" from the butt back to exactly what Tom said.
