I have a Loomis GL3 7wt. model F1267, two piece single hand fly rod that I built a number of years ago to fish steelhead. I would like to add a 4" or 5" rear handle to this rod and throw a skagit head on a running line, with a 15' tip. Could anyone tell me if this is doable, and if so, what weight Skagit head would you recommend for this rod. I asked this question on a Spey fishing site, but no one was able to answer me. Thanks, Paul Re: Loomis GL3

Ever thought of trying a single hand Skagit system like the ones built by Airflo or Scientific Angler? You just buy the line for your weight rod.
Pac Bay used to make a 5 inch fighting butt, might still find one at Hook and Hackle, Angler's Workshop of other Pac Bay dealers.Don't know how well they'd work as a spey extension. Re: Loomis GL3

I would contact Poppy at the Redd Shed and see if he can ship you a few lines, to demo, I would look to the AIRFLO Compact Skagit and give them a shot. Maybe start off around 350ish? and work up. I have a switch rod that is similar to that and a 350 rocks but the tips need to be light, say less than 90gn or so. Just a thought. Re: Loomis GL3

Thanks Spencer and Eric for your information. Since posting here, I've contacted G.Loomis Tech. support. They did get back to me the very same day. It was suggested I try a Scientific Anglers, ST-8 400 grain Skagit, single hand head. They also suggested using quality 20 - 25 lb. mono, as a running line. I'll look into their suggestions. I'm posting this info. to help anyone else who may be wondering about casting a skagit head with a similar rod. ....Paul Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
