Left handpen points?

I just bought a speedball pen kit with a few points in it and a hunt crows quill since it came with a vial of gold calligraphy ink. Using it is a bit frustrating . . .
I found some charts on the speedball sight that have instruction on how to use the pens to make different letters and I noticed in really small print on the chart it lists numbers for left handed tips. And I am left handed . . . does anyone have any experience with that? Thanks! Re: Left handpen points?

Andy,
I have many of the speedball tips that I use for writing. My wife is right handed and I am left handed, and neither of us see any difference in the ability to use the pens. It does take practice. It takes the right ink or paint to flow through the tips. You also need to keep the tips very very clean. If you get any deposits in the nib slit, the ink or paint wil no longer flow. If it can not be cleaned out, you will need a new nib. For most of the nib cleaning, I typically use Xylene. It is a very potent solvent that needs to be used with good ventilation, but it generally does an excellent job in keeping the nibs clean. Practice on different surfaces with different inks. You may simply be having issues with the inks and or materials on which you are applying the ink. Take care Roger p.s. Look at the nib under a strong magnifying glass or microscope and see if there is any angle to the nib. If you find an angle - favoring right hand use, you need to check out the left hand nibs. I have never checked, since I don't have any issue using the nibs as purchased. Re: Left handpen points?

Andy,
I just did a quick check on the speedball nibs: [www.dickblick.com] In general, it appears that the left hand nibs of which you speak are of the broad tipped variety, where the tip to the right or left - depending on the users hand preference is very important. i.e. if you are making very wide lettering strokes, the entire nib needs to remain in contact with the material. In the case of the right handed nib, the tip will be ground to remain flat when used by a right hand person. The converse is true for a left handed person. For most of the nibs that my wife and I use for rod lettering, the nib is very very fine and thus has no right or left taper to maintain nib tip contact with the writing surface. Just a hint clean the rod good with alcohol before you start writing. some time I have to lightly buff the area with a Gray 3M scuff pad. Good Wraps Bob Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
