For those of you that have given abalone a shot on your rods. At what point does the blank become to small to be practical for wrapping abalone around? Re: Abalone

Gary,
What are you trying to put it on? If you are looking at light weight rods, I feel that hook keeper or split grip installation would be perfect. Using it on the guides, all the way up the rod, would not be practical as the weight and lack of flexibility would hamper optimal rod performance. Kevin Re: Abalone

Kevin
Hook keeper area and split grip is all I am concidering. This is ultra light Matrix blank so I would only do the decorative stuff down at the grip area. How small a diameter is practical? Re: Abalone

In those areas, as small as you want. The more you soak the veneer, the more it will bend. However there is a trade off. The more you soak it, the more calcium is removed and the more shimmer and sparkle is removed. I would say that anything about the size of a pencil or smaller, won't be a practical application. All I can say is try it.

Thanks Kevin, that's exactly what I wanted to know. This blank is definately smaller than a pencil so I will try it out on my next planned build. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
