Hello fellow rod builders. I am a wrapper from 10 yrs ago but have got the bug bad now. sorry I know you have seen this question 100 times but I dont know the answer and have a buitiful tuna stick to cover but am terrified of the results. ok in the past I always used CP on the under wraps and guide feet then applied the bigh build and had great results with applying the HB. but have latley read that CP can cause cracking at the end of the feet which I have. so with this new rod I wrapped the under wraps then applied CP then covered with bigh build then double wrapped the rollers . now can you guys tell me that I can go straight HB to the naked NCP ( Double wrap) and not have a problem. I dont care to thin cause I use the torch. oh your gonna love this the previous work was done 3 yrs ago but hold on I had a plastic rod cover so no dirt. I know the new HB wont stick to the old HB but I'm gonna rock on. so is it true you fellas are getting away from the CP I always thought it was a weak bond. what do you guys think let me have it. fish on, Jerry Re: applying high build straight to NCP.

Go back to where ever you heard that nonsense and tell them to stop spreading myths. CP does not cause cracking of any kind. Nor does it cause a "weak bond." That's all nonsense.
Torching, causes cracking at the ends of the guide feet and elsewhere. So too, does thinning of epoxy with a solvent. ................. Re: applying high build straight to NCP.

Yes you can apply the epoxy straight to the NCP thread without color preserver. I have been doing that to both regular nylon and NCP without issue. Re: applying high build straight to NCP.

Along with torching and thinning, not prepping the guide feet will also cause cracking at the end.
CP causes no such event on it's own. You can safely apply finish directly to NCP. No issue there. Good luck. Terry Re: applying high build straight to NCP.

thanks for your input Tom. but do you go straight HB sometimes or do you always use CP first. you see Tom all I wrap is heavy surf rods and tuna sticks and I want the strongest bond possible.. thanks Jerry. Re: applying high build straight to NCP.

I built mostly heavy rods - surf and offshore IGFA trolling and stand-up. I always used CP and never once had any sort of problem. CP does not create a weak bond.

sorry for replying so late and thanks so much for your help but Phil why do you skip the CP step. my info is straight from flex coat saying that CP can cause cracking and heat is ok if used wisely. my plan is to do the under wrap first then CP then HB . then wrap guides sometimes double wrap then straight ( light ) HB within the correct time frame. whats your opinion. thanks Jerry Re: applying high build straight to NCP.
