Bent butt rod

I want to build a rod for a 9/0 spooled with wire line line for high speed trolling and I have a couple questions. First, what weight class is a 9/0 rated for, or I guess I should ask if I should use a 50# or a 80# blank. Second, what are the best non roller guides to use, the Silicon Nitride II or the Sic from Fuji?

9/0 is a reel size, not rod rating. Generally, such a reel would be spooled with 80lb line. Not always, but usually a reel of that size is spooled with heavier line than 50lb.

Silicon Nitride rings were designed for wire line (will work with mono or braid, of course). They are very durable. SIC would work equally well as long as you're not dropping rods on the deck often.

You will probably need more information on how it will be used. I've built 130lb class rods with roller guides and a swivel tip for 9/0 reels for wire line trolling. Many wire line set ups use only a swivel tip and a single roller stripper.

Most of the wire line rods I've built here though were longer rods, somewhat slow action with carbide/carbaloy type guides (Pac Bay Carmet guides are common). Those using that type of rod though are usually running a smaller reel, usually a Penn 113H or Penn 49M Mariner narrow spool.

Wire line is probably the toughest to build for, it not only is hard on the guides while it's moving in and out, the action of trolling keeps the rod flexing and the line bouncing about within the guides. I've built a few wire line rods with bent butts for use with 9/0 reels using only a very short stout blank and only the swivel roller tip.
Here's a pic from the web as an example of a 9/0 on a wire line rod: [www.captharry.com]

Most of these set ups are used for kite fishing or heavy trolling. Not much else but a solid glass blank, (read: broomstick), will handle it.

Keep in mind that the wire line won't give, its not very forgiving and a bottom strike or snag can be a pretty nasty hit on the equipment.
I see a few lighter wire line set ups every year, but their not too common here.

There are also various types of wire line, most that I see is Monel line or stainless steel. They do make copper, copper coated, braided and a few nylon coated lines. The worst is the braided as its the most likely to cut guides. Although I don't have anything against Silicone Nitride II or similar guides, I've seen a few of them smashed on trolling gear. I don't think it's place is on heavy trolling tackle.
Keep in mind that leaders and attaching hardware or wind ons will need extra clearance as well.

When dealing with some of the heavier rigs, it often seems more like assembling a crane boom than a fishing rod.
