Madeira vs Nylon for Micros

Just set up a Cranking rod ( CB70H) with 4.5 Micros and was wondering if it would better to wrap with Madeira than regular size A Nylon.
Madeira is smaller in diameter than size A Nylon thus you get more wraps on the little guide foot than you would with A Nylon. I understand also that the progression of wrapping will make the guide tighter to the blank even though you are using constant tension. If that be the case , wouldn't you have a more secure wrap with Madeira ?

Jay,
Wrap up a couple of rods each way and give us your test results.
Take care

I can’t really say anything about the differences since I only wrap with Madeira. It works fine, even wrapping a 3mm Batson as a tip, which is about the hardest wrapping I can imagine.

I took a different path to starting out wrapping, I figured since I was starting out and would have to learn anyway I would start with Madeira to have the largest color selection possible. If wrapping with Nylon is easier I wouldn’t know so I don’t worry about it.

I suggest you use CP if you use Madeira. The finish will not sit as flat on the first coat or two otherwise; the thread fibers seem to repell the finish to some degree.

I tend to think that more wraps with a thinner thread makes a better hold down than fewer with a thicker thread for this appilcation (smaller guides). I've never tested this theory, however. In my mind the difference in 'strength' between Madeira and nylon size 'A' is neglible when wrapping guides 6mm and under.

Les,

What is probably repelling the finish is the silicone lubricant that most sewing threads use to aid in use with high speed sewing machines. I would strongly recommend that you use CP on ANY sewing thread as it seals the thread as well as the silicone lubricant

Thanks, Mike!

I have not had that same repelling trouble with the Guidebrod threads. Thank you; now I know what it is that is making the finish do that! CP also seems to give me a smoother finish.
