Off-Topic: Spoonplugging?

Many years ago Buck Perry of Hickory, NC developed spoons and techniques for their use in fishing for bass. Does anyone out there know if these spoons are still available and/or how they were used? I know I fished with a guy in the late 1960's who used these spoons and trolled at that time but can't remember how he did it. I'd sure appreciate any help I can get on this. Please feel free to e-mail.

Yes, they are still available from his family company. Spoonplugs are intended to be trolled fast, in a systematic approach which locates the lake bottom and the subsequent contours of the bottom. They come in various sizes and will accurately troll at a specific depths. The system did utilize very short 4 to 4-1/2 foot long rods and high pount test line. There are still many spoonplugging fishing clubs around the country. If you do a Google search you'll turn some up.

These were my first trolling baits and they do, indeed, work just as Buck Perry said they would. I've got a set and won't part with them because they still work.

Hopefully, you have Buck's books as well. They tell you everything you need to know about using these spoons, and a lot more. A lot of what he wrote is actually the foundation of most of the stuff you read today in a lot of "bassin' " magazines and articles, similar to what Clemens' books represent in our rod building craft.

I've never even seen a spoonplug downunder but happened to be looking at his website the other night
