Bamboo Rod Making Classes for 2009

Friends,

In 2009 I will host lead three different types of Rod Making Classes.

First will be the once per month individual, one-on-one lessons. These lessons run 3-4 days in which you make a two piece, single tipped rod blank. We work long hours and focus on helping you learn the process. Contact me at maker@canerods.com to schedule a convenient time in 2009 and for fee information.

Second will be small group classes for a maximum of three students per session. These are five day classes which provide a little more relaxed schedule than the 3 day lessons. We spend about 10 hours per day showing you how to use the tools and equipment necessary for making a rod. Four sessions are available, but are filling fast. Contact me at maker@canerods.com for available openings:

February 16-20
May 4-8
October 12-16
November 9-13

Third is another project I'm working on, and will share more about as soon as details are firmed up.

Best,
Harry

Jeff,

Thanks for the words of encouragement. The School is quite enjoyable.

And yes, I still carry the star shaped heat-treating fixtures. More about them can be found here:

I only make them in the five foot lengths. But if you'll email me with your snail mail address, I can send you some 1' long pieces. I have several people who use a 5' fixture and a shorter piece for one piece rods. Though I haven't done so myself, the folks who have claim it works well.

Hope this helps,
Harry

Harry,

Do you offer classes on just restoring cane rods?

Thanks,

Bill in WV

No Bill I don't. Do you think there might be enough interest in that to make it worthwhile?

Good idea Bill. As soon as I get things lined out with these rod making classes, I'll see what interest there is in a restoration class.

Hello Harry, my name is John.I need some advice on restoring a bamboo boat rod.The rod it self is in excellent shape no cracks or splites .It needs new guides and rewraping but otherwise in good shape. My questin is what is the best way to remove the old varnish completly from the rod.I may have already messed up,I tried scraping it off with razor blade witch worked pretty good but some areas are lighter than others. Is this normal or did I scrape to much in some areas? Is it posible to use some sort of finish remover?Any advise you can give me will be aprecated. Thanks
