Fuji Soft Touch Reel Seats

Hello,
I am considering using the Fuji DPSSD17 Soft Touch Reel Seat on the next rod I build. I cannot find any locally to look at. Before I order them, I would like to know if anyone here has used them, and how durable the coating is. The rod will be used for salmon / steelhead fishing. Thank you.

The coating doesn't come off - at least it hasn't for me. It's sort of made into the seat. Very unusual yet warm and just very slightly soft to the touch.

I believe a few other manufacturers have introduced similar type surfaces on some of their seats as well.

I haven't had any issue either. It is a very good looking reel seat with a sharp "beauty ring" on the locking nut. The extreme black color of the seat can really help make a rod standout in a crowd. My only wish is that they were available in an ergonomic style.

I've had one get multiple very small pinhole coating removals on the trigger curve area on the offhand side. The structure or comfort hasn't been effected at all and it doesn't seem to be getting worse so it's a minor problem.

It is a coating and will not come off easily. But it will also tend to hold scales and slime more readily than the regular type and is a little harder to clean.

I've built a couple for people, as well as myself. The aluminum rod holders will wear teh coating off quickly. Personlly, I dont' think the price is warranted

They are pricey but look great and feel nice. They also don't ever become slippery (for me anyway).

As far as durability goes, I have been using them for 3 years without an issue.

If you are building on expensive blanks with titanium guides and custom threadwork coupled with many hours of work, I believe the extra $25 or so is worth it!

Cheers
Chris

Let's also add that the coating does NOT like acetone or solvents.

Batson makes a textured reel seat which I believe is the same coating as the Fuji's, and you can get it with most of their reel seats including the exposed blank.

Unless they have changed it recently, the Batson soft grip doesn't feel the same as the Fuji version, and is for me anyway, not as durable as far as light reaming and wear and tear.

It is best to buy the ones that fit - reaming with coarse grit may start separation that will get worse with time.
