.If Iam using the "Scanlan" method of spiral wrap do I place the guides at the same intervals I normally would? Also, in your "Making the Transition" (V6,I) i didnt find any guide size difference in his method. Do I use the same guide sizeing I would normally or at least as recomended.?

This is my first attempt and your article has already helped me a ton, thanks.

Vern

No, you end up putting those involved in the transition a bit closer than if they were used normally all along the top of the rod.

For instance, I have an older spiral rod with the Revolver or Scanlan type spiral. The entire transition takes place within 12 inches. I have a size 16 butt guide on the 0 axis, then 4 inches past that I have a size 10 guide at 60 degrees, then 4 inches past that a size 10 guide at 120 degrees and then 4 inches past that a size 10 guide at 180 degrees. This is a heavy live bait rod.

You could likely use smaller guides if you don't have to pass any leaders or knots. It works well and has probably been around as long or longer than any other spiral method.

I never offset any of my guides, but you could, ala the Forhan Revolver method. The butt guide and the first guide underneath the rod would be offset just enough to put the line on the exact 0 and 180 axis. All the rest underneath would be on the 180 degree axis.
