Have customer with Diawa Heavy with fast tip. Splintered bread between tip and 1st guide down. It is a 7ft rod with a split grip. Is it worth fixing? I can do so, however would cost more than what the rod is worth. Do I tell him to toss it and I can build him a better rod......this is a new customer.
Thanks Re: Repair

Vern, 2 questions 1. How are you planning on fixing it? 2. How much are you charging him to fix it?
Simple fix, cut at or as far in front of the first guide as possible new sized tip and your done. You have to tell him that no matter how you fix it the "feeling" of the rod is going to change. If you are planning on trying to graph another piece of rod, as described by Ralph O', then yes it will cost more to fix it, and the feeling of the rod will still change anyway. With a new customer I tell them this is the correct way to fix your rod, and it costs this much to do so. Then I give them the "cheap" version, it is up to them how much they want their rod as close to original as possible. Any time a customer comes to my shop, I have all kinds of custom rods in various stages of completion, you don't have to tell him you build custom rods he can see it for himself. Bottom line if you have to try and convince him your custom rods are better than his Daiwa, your already behind in the sale of a new rod. Most of the rods I have sold are at the marina, boat dock or on the side of a stream or river, and the reel usually goes with it, more money in your pocket. Re: Repair

If you do it according to Ralph's repair, the feel of the rod won't change by much, and perhaps not even enough for him to ever notice it. However, I can't see doing such a repair for less than $25 or so and if the rod isn't worth that you may be doing him a favor to just suggest replacing it.

most of the bait shops that do repairs in my neck of the wood , charge $10.00 a guide. you should cut the blank just under the splinter, put a new tip on it, now remove the first guide and center it up with the tip and the second guide. do you wraps and clear. charge him $20 for the 2 guides, and $5 for the extra work.
