HELP! Wrap finish "drooping belly"

Hi everyone,

My rod that I left turing on my drying motor last night, fell off from the motor and needless to say left me with most of my wraps having a drooping "belly" of rod finish. Not a very pretty sight.

Is there a way I can fix these wraps and possibly refinish?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Using a single edge razor blade, very carefully slice the "droops" until they are as even with the rest of the finish as you can make them, taking care not to cut into the thread.

Put on another coat and it will level out nicely.

Walt is dead on the money. Trim SOWLY a little at a time, and DONT cut the threads as he suggested.

I had this happen once and once is enough. I use a PVC cap with 3 nylon screws to hold the handle. I use 3 rubber bands and hook one on each screw head, around the rod, and connect to a screw head 120 degrees away. Never lost one again.

Shave it off with a razor blade just like Walt said, should fix the problam.
For prevention,,,,,I do exactly as Chuck does !!

Thanks everyone for the quick and helpful responses. That worked like a charm (no threads cut!) and I even put some 600 grit to it after I sliced the excess off with the blade and got it back into shape for the next coat.

Chuck - you are right on the money. This happened one time and once is enough. I made me way to Home Depot last night to build my rod reel seat chuck out of the PVC cap. Thanks for the design recommendation. This sure beats the heck out of my "jimmy-rigged" design.

Thanks,
Jonathan
