I have a friend that would like to resurface a pushpole. Made of Graphite. No idea what finish was on it originally. What would i use? Permagloss? Any tips are appreciated.

Steve,
I haven't done a push pole but I did a set of drift boat oars that were about 10' long each. The problem with his was that the original finish had worn off and the graphite portion was exposed and would leave splinters in your hands when you handled them. I just used flex coat and it turned out fine. Probably had a thicker finish than the original one but you could handle them again.

Todd

Steve - I refinished a 20'0" Carbon pushpole several months ago. I used Permagloss and tinted it with black colorant ... it came out beautifully. I used 2 large bottles for the entire project. Start to finish in one afternoon.

Jim - can you tell me how you applied it? And did you hang it or something after to keep it from running?

Applied with a sponge brush. Hung horizontally from the garage ceiling in four places. Me applying the finish and the owner rotating the pole as I worked and for 15-20 minutes after. Later we went back and did "touch ups" on the unfinished areas, we moved the support twines over a few inches and went at it. It was completely finished and dried pretty quickly.

I've done several pool cues and also long dippers for ice fishing. Used Flex Coat
High Build and they came out nice. I built several rod dryers with different size openings,
so I can fit just about anything round in them as long as they aren't too heavy.

Steve,
If you have a power wrapper with a lathe chuck on the head, you can easily chuck up the push stick in the wrapper.
Then, move out the steady rests to support the pole as needed.

You can use a couple of tables in a garage and clamp the steady rests to a table or saw horse to get the necessary pole support for a long pole.

Then, simply first use the power wrapper to power sand the pole for refinishing, do a clean up and wipe down with acetone.
Then, use flex coat - tinted if you like, or you could use carpenter finishing resin as well to coat the pole. Use the wrapper or a rod dryer with a chuck sized to hold the pole on the end to rotate the pole to avoid runs in the finish.

Take care and good luck.
Roger
