I am looking to build a spinning rod for my wife. Specs would be 7ft, M Power, F Action, 2 pc. I have not been able to locate a decently priced blank, and was wondering how easy it is to convert a fly blank into a 2 piece rod. Also, what kind of conversion needs to be made to equal the specs that I'm looking for.
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks! Re: blank selection

St Croix 2S70MF2 or 3S70MF2. In addition, Batson has a SB841-3 that would work well ... it is a three-piece, but that just makes for improved portability. Re: blank selection

Hi Josh
I noticed the same thing. There is not many around. Theres lots of Mod to Fast but not much Fast in the specs you are looking for. Advanced Tublar Composites popping blanks (ATC P702-2, IP702-2) probably more light to med then med. I really like the Batson SB841-3 Its a great blank Edited 3 time(s). You'll most likely have a problem finding a fast action fly blank in that length medium price. Stan Grace Helena, MT "Our best is none too good" Re: blank selection

Josh I have tried it with a fly blank and it doesn't work. I don't think you can get what you are looking for out of a fly blank.
Take a look at the specs on a Rainshadow ISP 843F. And it's not too expensive. J.B.Hunt Bowling Green, KY Re: blank selection

You could always get a 1 pc in the specs you want, and cut it in the middle and fit ferrules. Bill in WV Re: blank selection

Thank you for all the leads and advice!
This will only be my second project (I finished my fly rod last night), so I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible but able to do what she needs it to do. If I do choose to cut a one piece how does that effect the action? and how easy is it to fit the ferrules? Re: blank selection

If this is your second rod ... now is not the time to be trying to engineer a ferrule, IMO. What is wrong with the two blanks (St Croix 2S70MF2 or 3S70MF2) that I mentioned? They EXACTLY match the specs you requested. Re: blank selection

Jim
That's what I was thinking, but if it wasn't a huge mess I thought that would be a way to cut a little cost. Basically it is the price on the St Croix. The 2s70mf2 was the only one I had found and I was looking for something in the 40-50 dollar range. Thinking further on it though, with the time and energy I am spending on it another $30 isn't that big of a deal. Hopefully it will last her a long time. Thank you. Re: blank selection

That Batson blank IS in your price range. It is a three-piece blank, but IMO that is better not worse ... easier portability. My very favorite spinning rods are some 4-piece models I built. I actually pack the twin tube INSIDE my suitcase when going on vacation ... it doesn't get any better. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
