removing old thread finish

I've got a rod that I broke the tip on and received a replacement. It has sat around for 2 or 3 years and I think I will just redo it at the current length. I had originally removed the guides and put them on the new blank. I have removed all the thread and scraped the finish with my fingernail and credit card but there is still some residual finish at each guide location. Since I will be placing the new guides in different locations I would like to remove all evidence of the old guide finish. It is flat charcoal blank. It never did have any gloss finish. I would like any suggestions to remove the last remains of the old thread finish.
Thanks, Ron Re: removing old thread finish

Ron ; There was a suggestion on an earlier post to use a hair drier to soften the old finish,it will come off easier. Might try that and use the old credit card or a plastic knife, then clean up with alcohol. J.B.Hunt Bowling Green, KY Re: removing old thread finish

By Golly the GooGone does work ! I just tried it on an old solid fiberglass Boat Rod I'm rebuilding for a guy. Took the old wrap finish right off.
Thanks Unc !! Good tip ! J.B.Hunt Bowling Green, KY Re: removing old thread finish

Which flavor of Goo Gone? Just the basic cleaner?

Should one be wary of the goo gone destroying a blank if the blank's finish is scratched? It seems if it will remove the finish epoxy, that it may wreck the epoxy inside the blank if allowed to penetrate.
