I have read several posts relating to refinishing and rebuilding rods. Recently I saw a post about scraping, sanding a rod and then using permagloss for finish. My question is do you have to sand and scrape the the entire blank or just the areas that need it, i.e ferruls and former locations of the guides. Also can I use the flex coat finish in place of the permagloss or are they two different animals all together.
Thank you Re: permagloss vs. flex coat rod finish?

Two entirely different animals. Flex Coat is an epoxy and would not be a good choice for refinishing a rod blank. Much too heavy and does not adhere as well as Permagloss. PG is a moisture curing urethane that is designed to properly wet out surfaces such as a rod blank. It's light, hard and adheres extremely well to a properly prepared surface.
You can refinish the entire blank or do it piece meal only on those sections which you feel need it, but the former is probably the all around better approach if you want the best overall job possible. ............... Re: permagloss vs. flex coat rod finish?

Number one, I would not sand unless you are using a 400 pluse wet dry sand paper. I use a gary scuff pad by 3M. Remember this where ever you are going to put a finish. the rod must be scuffed preped and cleaned. If this is not done the finish well look like crap when done. Do a search on how to apply Permagloss. There is lots of good info.
