Window decal on a rod??

I was wondering if anyone has ever used a window decal on a rod? I have a school decal that I purchased that is small enough for a surf rod but I was wondering if anyone has used something like this. The description of the decal is "This outside application decal adheres to any smooth glass, metal or plastic surface. It is removeable with a blow dryer and it is weather and fade reistant." I have no idea what it is made of but it does have a clear looking finish on it.

Any ideas if this might work? Maybe use color preserver over it?

If it's meant to be applied to the outside of a window on your vehicle, it will stick to the surface of a slick-finished rod. If you're going to put it on a "sanded" blank, try putting a coat of Gudebrod Spreed Coat on first as surface prep.

Other than that, I'm assuming it's a peel-&-stick (asa opposed to a waterslide decal) and if so, once it's on, let it dry in place for at least an hour. Then you need to cover it with either CP or your epoxy finish.

There have been a number of articles about applying stuff to rods, such as feathers, and they all recommend making sure that where the finish meets the edges of the thing, you watch for bubbles and work till you remove them. Otherwise, it's no harder than working with tapes or other 3-D type materials. The only thing to watch out for, though, is the decal's reaction to CP or epoxy or whatever you put over it. Some decals will soften or melt, even though they are meant to withstand heat, weather, etc.

Hope that helps - - -

I'm working on a rod thats going for a dragonfly theme. I had a heck of a time finding a dragonfly decal, but finally came up with some at a craft store. I practiced on a scrap blank. started with a coat of permagloss. applied the decal and coated with CP. then finished over it with threadmaster. this worked.

i would suggest getting another one to run a test on

Thanks guys. I actually got two just in case the first try didn't workout. I'll try just covering with TM first and if that messes up the decal I will go with CP over it and then the TM.

I built a Spiderman rod for a little boy. Used little Spiderman stickers that came on a card from Wal Mart . Peel them off and stick them . Coated them with Flex Coat water based CP then applied Flex Coat finish. Worked fine , never had a problem. Proudest little boy in the neighborhood too.
