second coat or not ???

Have been referbishing a 4/0 boat rod for a co-worker.Replaced everything.
However when it came time to put the epoxy on,I done it the way I have been. But! on two of the larger guides when you look real close you can feel the thread on the top of the guid foot.
Done a search but ony came up with what to do on nubs.My question is can I put just a light coat just in that area and rotate the rod ? I really don't want to have to do the guide over and if I just put put a second coat on the complet guide, it might look like an over kill on epoxy. What do I do ???

Also this same co-worker gave me an old rod.A lighter boat rod,6'8"-16" wood handle, unibutt real seat.
Has True Temper T/T 95-15 Made in USA and has Custom Built Ninety Five would any one know anything about this rod? Any thing would be appreciated. <<DON>>>

Put a 2nd light coat over only the wraps that you can feel the threads on; best if done within 48 hours of the first coat, Don.

Not sure on your True Temper...

You can add an additional coat without making it look too heavy or thick, just don't put on too much. A second application is almost always easier because you're working on a smooth surface.

It doesn't matter which you use, just put it on thin with either one of them, Don.

You can put just as thin a coat with a high build finish. You can't make a thicker coat with one coat of a thin, regular build finish.

I'm curious myself: if it's been more than about 24 hours do you have to rough up the first coat? I know that for many epoxy finishes this is the protocol (and if the there is any hint of an amine blush you have to scrub it off first before sanding).

Most epoxies can be successfully recoated without deglossing the first application if the second application is done within about 48 to 72 hours. The sooner the better, but you do have a couple to 3 days window for doing this before you'd need to degloss. At roughly room temperature, of course.

If the weather or temperature where you'd be doing this has been extremely warm, this window will be quite a bit more narrow. Likewise if it's been very cool, the window will be wider.
