effect of blank lengthening on action?

If I add about a 12 inch extension (to put the handle/seat on) to the butt section of a blank, what does that do to the action?
Does it make it faster? slower? Should it be butt over tip? tip over butt? How long should that extension be in addition to the 12 inches I wish to add? Any comments on any facet of this project would be welcomed. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/01/2007 03:12PM by russell mcgraw. Re: effect of blank lengthening on action?

There was a complete article on extending rods in a past issue of RodMaker.
The action will be become faster. You can run a CCS test to find out exactly how much faster it will be. The blank should fit into the extension. Something that long isn't likely to hold up if you just shove an extension into the butt of the blank. That's not the best way to go about it. If you'll make the joint overlap about 5 to 6 times the diameter of the blank butt, you'll have done about all you can do in that regard. Any longer is not necessary only adds more weight, not strength. .......... Re: effect of blank lengthening on action?
