EVA Butt

Since I've seen several EVA posts... this came to mind, now I want to make it but not sure how (dang site has inspired me to spend money AGAIN!).

I'm going to do a split grip with EVA (casting rod). Suggestions on how to do the butt cap?

I've always just done the split grip in cork and then used a EVA cap on the butt. How could I make the whole butt EVA? Turn a piece and then put a plug in it? Turn and use a cap the same way I do the cork/eva butt (worry about the two matching if using all black with that)?

Thanks!

I am a noob rod builder but I used several layers of those craft foam sheets glued together and turned into a plug. To turn I just glued it onto a dowel and chucked it into the press and cut it off when it was round. I glue it into the butt, let it dry and chuck it all up and turn it smooth. With the same colors you can barely tell. Mudhole does have some EVA butts but are limited on selection.

Fishsticks4U to the left has an EVA buttcap that I really like: EVABC20. I think I took his last 5? I've been using them on the ends of cork and Hapalon. I just cut a tendon on the hapalon to fit the inside of the EVA cap, match it in size as close as possible, then slide the hapalon or cork to the end of the mandrel, add the EVA cap to it and cut them both at the same time (EVA cap not glued in place, cut the tendon to fit tightly) to make a perfect fit.

I make a butt cap using the solid EVA discs. I glue it onto the rear grip and turn it on a mandrel. Slide it off and then work it onto the blank from the rear.

Alex...You can use a piece of standard EVA with hole size to match your blank, turn for your shape and extend the butt cap appx 1/2 inch beyond the end of the blank and epoxy a butt plug[Mudhole stocks various sizes] into the end and you wont have to worry about the softer EVA getting buggered up. Serves its purpose and looks good too.
