I'm looking for input on heavy weight ice blanks. I need a blank that will handle 15 to 20# line and lures from 2 to 4 oz.. The rods will be used for jigging heavy spoons and soaking large dead baits for Lake Trout in the 20 to 50# range. Any info would be welome. Thanks in advance. You might try the, fishing lake simcoe website, go to the forum section. Canadians up there fish for lake trout and whitefish.Very good site with alot of helpful fisherman, sure to set you right up.I dont recall hearing or seeing anything extremly heavy for Ice rods, but I just go there to catch the pearch. Try looking in garage sales and flea markets for some old solid glass rods. Cut them down to the size you need. Joe Douglas Re: Heavy/Xheavy Ice Blanks Suggestions Needed

Dave & Fred
I've tried rebar and it gives me a sore arm when jigging.....works fine for selines though. LOL Steve I've spent 20+ years fishing simcoe & thier Lakers don't compare.....sorry I have my gear that I used there and am a little under gunned. Joe Garage sales sounds like a good thought at first, however I live in the North West Territories and our population is only 40,000 or so spread over a couple of million square miles. The choice and availability just isn't there. If there is any body out there that has some old solid glass blanks and wants to sell them please let me know. While I don't fish the type of weights you're talking about, I build all my Laker rods out of full sized blanks. Just cutting out the section of the blank that is going to work best for the application.
Mudhole typically has some great deals on really cheap blanks. You can afford to screw up one or two blanks just to get the right one. .......................... Better to have and not need than to need and not have. Re: Heavy/Xheavy Ice Blanks Suggestions Needed

Batson Enterprises sells Solid Glass blanks. I know of a few customers that take our .385"x.105"x72" ( Forecast - Solid Glass) and cut them back to the desired length and build those for the application you mentioned. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us or one of our many Authorized Distributors.

I built a laker rod for myself last winter for a trip to the Apostle Islands out on Lake Superior (Chequamegon Bay). I found a 1/2 blank - top section at the St. Croix factory - not sure what the line rating on it is, but it's a rating or two below "pool cue" LOL! I think it's an SC2 blank, 42" long. Spiral wrapped, for jigging 1 1/2 - 4oz baits in 200 FOW on 80lb PowerPro. It worked great - and the guide loved the rod as well. I think all the suggestions above are good - what I would suggest doing is building a longer rear handle than your standard ice rod though, it really helps when jigging those heavy baits all day.
