What guides would you use on an 8 wt fly blank that is to be used as a spinning rod. Thanks Re: Guides on 8 wt fly blank spin rod.

That would depend totally upon the reel, line size and blank power and action. It would hard for anyone to just toss out sizes and styles without a bit more info. Ultimately, you need to do some testing to determine what would be best. If you are going to use light mono - 12lb or under, then I would certainly consider setting it up with the New Guide Concept System and using whatever guides would allow you to do that in the best fashion on that blank. ..................... I agree. It will be with 12lb mono and under, and has a medium action (9'6" 8wt). The reel to be used is uncertain as the rod is to be a surprise gift for a friends father (waleye fisherman). I thought I'd try it with one of my reels. I did want to try the Fuji New Concept method that I read about in the Rod Maker mag. Is there a particular guide size that one would first try on the 1st guide location point? Thanks Re: Guides on 8 wt fly blank spin rod.

I would start with a 25 or maybe 30 in the Concept style fuji, using whichever one allows you to make that straight line path from the spool centerline to the choke guide location. I think the article spelled out how to decide on sizes. I used a set up of 30, 20, 12 and then single foot low frame 7's all the rest of the way on a 8' light saltwater rod recently. The first 3 guides were very high frame concept types. I don't know if that would work on your rod but it might give you someplace to start. Re: Guides on 8 wt fly blank spin rod.

I think since it is a light rod, I would try a smaller first guide and see how the line piles up against the guide. i would try the heavest line that would be used as well as the worst line (not softest) so that what ever the line the person will use on it will work good. Then pick a spot for the guide and move it forward each time you cast until you get line slap an mark that spot. then move it back towards the reel each cast until it starts piling up on the face of the guide and mark that spot. now put your guide half way between the marks. I don't like large clunky spinning guides! Kerry Re: Guides on 8 wt fly blank spin rod.
