George I don't use preassembled any more but when I cut a cork section like your desribing I use dental floss. First you place the grip on a mandrel (tight) and put in your lathe. Once spinning high speed you tighten the floss between your fingers and just press down. One warning though don.t EVER wrap it around your finger as if it gets stuck you want to let go. Thats the way we do it anyway and its perfect cut everytime. BillyB-rod co

never would have thought of that Billy - I bet a piece of braided fishing line would work very well too. I would wear gloves and be sure not to wrap it around the fingers as well

A similar technique is used by bakers to cut large sheet cakes in order to put yummy icing between thin layers. They use a partially frozen layer (to give it some stiffness), surround it with a piece of floss or heavy thread and pull the two ends together. It cuts all the way through the layer. My wife has me help her do this whenever she bakes a large cake for a special occasion.

Yum Yum.

I think the heavy gloves and braided line idea might be a really good suggetion to follow.

Fishing line works good, Size D thread does also. Like Billy said, DON"T wrap anything around your fingers if you are happy with the number tou have now!!!!

Mike (Southgate, MI)
If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!!

Funny you shold ssay that Larry Im a chef and have been for 30 years. Seven of them i was chief baker for Marriott corp. I know exactly what your talking about. For some reason the braid does not hold up to the heat for me josh. I have tried and it just broke but was only 10 pund test that could have beenwhy. I have used mono with good results though. Yes gloves would seem like a good idea guess thats why i never thought of that lol
