IMO ... 8-14# line and 9/16 ounce. Knock a few inches (3-4) off the tip and you will have a better rod. You might want to consider a steelhead/salmon blank, like the SCIII series. Nice two-piece design that will still have a warranty when you get done and the taper may be more suited for what you are doing.

The formula for the approximate maximum casting weight is: the fly rod weight as the numerator and 16 as the denominator. 9/16th ounce, yes, but don't mutilate the poor rod tip. I've made spinning rods from 6'6'' 2wt. to 9' 10 weight for self, friends & customers. Cutting off part of the tip is counter productive, IMO, unless test casting proves this to be necessary. If you're wrong you can't put it back.

If at first you don't succeed, go fishing, then try, try again.

I have build some spinning rods on fly blanks and i can tell you with one rod build on AMTAK fly blank 9' W8 and another build on Shikari II 9' W8 i can cast without problem 1oz..The same with another rod build on ST. CROIX SCIII(AVID) 9' W9. MODEL 3F909.
I can't tell you what pound test line because i use FIRELINE 4LB.,,POWER PRO 5LB.,SPIDERWIRE STEALTH 6LB.,SPIDER WIRE ULTRACAST 6LB. and SPIDERWIRE ULTRACAST 10LB.,but if you know to use the reel ,to ajust the drag you don't have problem with havier line.

Line strength doesn't really relate. You would want to line it with something that will break before the rod would - the line should be the weak link in the chain.

If you had an ERN rating, you could really dial in a lure weight range. As it is, the only guess would be that it would do okay with about 1/2 ounce lures, but keeping in mind that there is no standard for what constitutes a "9-weight" fly rod, that's only a guess. It could handle much more, or a bit less.

THank you all for your responses i figured a 1/2 ounce lead head should be able to be thrown from a 9 wieght .I am going to make a 4 piece travel spinning rod to handle light saltwater if we ever go back to Hawaii. The 4 piece should pack down enough to get on the plane.I got a rod ups once and they broke thru the pvc tube.THat was a dissapointing experience. Thanks again

Lets reverse the question...What would be the maximum # tippet you could use with a 9x9? Answer...18# test. The "GENERAL" rule of thumb, is to double the flyline rating of the rod and that would be the MAX tippet breaking strength. But, personally, I would base the line rating on the action. Fast action rod-heavier line, slower action rod-lighter line. just my .02

Alex. I built a spinning rod for surf fishing from a 9' 4 piece 9wt Forecast fly blank. The rod can easily handle a 1/2 ounce lure and 10 pound test line. Im sure you could go heavier on the line but I would be reluctant to go much over 1/2 ounce on the lure... Bob
