Damaged butt section of a surf rod

I just began rewrapping a 17 year old blank (forerunner of a Lami 1201L) and found that the butt section under the cork tape has had a 2" piece knocked out of it (probably from being used as a walking stick). My gut says to put a tapered cork (etc) into the end, epoxy it and just rewrap the whole thing again in cork tape with a new rubber butt cap. What I'm wondering is if it isn't better to cut about 3" above the crack to prevent the split from traveling further up the blank or if I'm just being paranoid.

I'd suggest cutting it to stop the split, sleeving it to extend it back to the original length, and of course re-wrap and add whatever butt cap you like. The re-wrap will have to cover the joint, though.
