Two Spines One Blank

I followed the advise on the previous post I did about finding the spine on the butt half of a 2 piece rod and it worked great. Thanks for the suggestions.

After locating the spines on the individual halfs I put the 2 together and aligned the marks I had made to see what the result of a spine on a 2 piece rod would be.

Surpirse, surpirse. I have a rod with 2 spines 180 apart from each other. I thought that I had marked one of the peices wrong and aligned the marks 180 from each other. The same thing happened. When assembled I have a rod with 2 spines.

Has anyone else run into this phemon?

I'm wondering if you are using LAmiglas blanks? All their XMG & IM700 blanks have spines located 180 apart.

Yes to the Lamiglas but it is a ESH.

The only way I have of finding the spine is to bend the tip straight up verticle while the butt is on a hard surface. The bend is fairly deep 45-60 degrees but I'm not able to distinguish between primary and secondary.

How is that done?

Some blanks (notably Lamiglas) exhibit 2 spines, one more pronounced than the other. Some blanks actually have two distinct spines, one closer to the tip than the other. This can happen on one-piece as well as 2-pc rods. This is more of a problem. Anyway, pick the one that fits your intended application.

The ESH XMG 50 blanks are dandy blanks and a great value.

If you measure each with the CCS you can find which one of the two is the softest, which will be the effective spine.

Or you can disregard both spines and just work with the straightest (stiffest) axis.

I'd go with the straightest axis (diregard the spine) and build with belly down (if any)

Darby,
I would recommend you flex the blank to the point that it locks in between the 180's, then place the guides accordingly depending upon whether you are building spinning or conventional.

Darby, I'd go with Todd's advice as he designed the blank I sent you.

Get your spine lined up vertically on a section and place the butt end of the blank section near the edge of a table and hold it tight. Bend the small end straight down and let go. If the rod vibrates in a straight line, you have the right spine. If it begins to have an egg or round pattern as it vibrates you are not on the spine. I have found what I thought was the absolute spine line up and it wasn't. This is what I do on all blanks to set the final alignment of the blank spine.
