I need some ideas on how to go about finding the spine on the butt piece. Is it okay that I don't put as dramatic a bend into it as the tip (90 degrees). The butt piece seems to snap to the same position with out putting a very deep bend into it. Is this acceptable?

Yes it is if you are wanting to try and find the spine. You would have a hard time bending the butt section the same as you do the tip. Re: two piece rod spine

Someone on this board suggested that you place the section on top of a couple of books at each end and then press down in the middle and the section should/would roll/snap into place with the spine identified. Re: two piece rod spine

Dont freak out guys but here it goes I have seen some butt sections come back from time to time under warranty from builders trying to find the spine on butt sections that are just too stiff to flex and I will tell you that especially on four piece fly rods" if it doesn't bend much than dont worry about the spine" because if you push it to hard odds are you will break it!!! I use soft bound books. The handles I check are usually 6 to 7 feet long. This usually affords easy identification of the spine. I do not recall mention as to the type of ferrule. I have found some spigots to be misaligned sufficiently to mandate the use of a visual alignment. Re: two piece rod spine

I put the butt section on the table, hold the tip with one hand and with the other hand apply pressure to the middle of the blank and roll the blank on the table. The blank will seek out the spine. I then mark the spine with a piece of masking tape marked with a pen. I then repeat the process just to make sure. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
