any suggestions on guides to put on a 5wt 9" fly rod primarly used for medium river trout and a 8wt 10' fly rod to be used from salmon/steelhead? I heard alot about the REC recoil guides for lighter rods, but never had any experience with them yet vs. the single foot insert guides. On the larger rod I would like to use fuji single foot with insert, but not sure what is best price and duribility. thanks again for your time and advice. Re: guide suggestion 5wt & 8wt fly

You have so many choices here that's hard to really nail anything down. The Recoils offer some advantage in the fact that there are no ceramic rings to crack or eject. However, such is not really a problem unless you're very hard on your equipment.
Titanium SIC is a great choice, but expensive and maybe overkill if you're not using the rods in saltwater. Back down to stainless steel frames and anybody's SIC ring is a good all around choice. ................ Re: guide suggestion 5wt & 8wt fly

I think the Recoils would work fine for either rod. Very light and give a crisp, clean feel to the rod. I'm now a big fan of the Titanium SiC guides on fly rods. I don't think they're overkill for freshwater because their reduced weight compared to any stainless guide. Even on an 8wt., I wouldn't want that extra weight. Titanium all the way (if you can afford it). IMO
Have fun, Todd Re: guide suggestion 5wt & 8wt fly

I'd go with heavy wire Recoils, combined with 2 good(Alconite,Zirconia,SIC,Nanolite,or Gold Cermet rings) double foot ceramics on the 5wt and a full set of titanium frame SIC Fugi Concepts on the 8wt. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
