I have found a few links and articles about turning your own handles but wasw wondering if there is aome more info out there that I am missing. Do I sand by hand or should I use a block behind my sand paper ? Is there anything to watch out for?

RodMaker has run several articles on this subject. Andy Dear's DVD covers it well too.

For turning cylinders, you want to back the sandpaper with a block so you don't scallop the cylinder. But, for making the small contours, you will have to go freehand for a bit. I try to use narrow strips of sandpaper - about an inch wide, and work quickly.

Practice makes perfect. Like many things we do in rod building, the more you do the more proficient you'll become. Buy some cheap cork or preformed grips and practice.

I use the 1in. spools of automotive wet/dry sandpaper from 80 grit to 400 grit. For a moderate cost you have a years supply, maybe longer.

If at first you don't succeed, go fishing, then try, try again.

A lighter touch than you might think, as well. Take your time.
