7 wt guides

I am going to build a 9' 7 wt fly rod. I want to use guides that will get the most out of the rod. I am thinking about Batson, single foot with zirconium inserts. A 12mm stripper, 10 mm single foot, then 8 size 8 with a 7mm tip top with the same zirconium insert. Any thoughts?

If you're running a standard WF fly line, then 8's are probably larger than you need. Try 7's, or even 6's to reduce weight on the tip area. Moving down one size on the running guides will make a noticeable difference in response and recovery of your rod.

But don't go too small. I'd buy a set of running guides in each size and try them all.

Thanks for the help Tom. So are you indicating a 12mm, 10mm, then 8- 7mm? Or 12 mm, 10 mm, then 4 - 7mms and 4 - 6 mms. I believe I read something you wrote a while ago that the quicker you get then line traveling in a parallel path down the blank the better. Rather than going from 3 - 8 mm, then 3 - 7 mm, then 3 - 6 mm it is better to use the same size running guides. Is that correct?

Skip the 8's. You only need 3 guide sizes on any rod. It's better to use all the same size running guides. It makes no sense to step them down through all the sizes just because the manufacturer offers all those sizes (Thank goodness they don't make 9's and 5's).

Most likely, I would do this - 16 high frame, 10 high frame, then 7's in low frame fly type all the way out.

I've used 6's as the running guides and the 7 wt. line and loop/knot connections pass fine. Like Tom said, for your other guides, use high framed guides. I prefer single footed all the way.
If you're really wanting to get the most out of the rod, I would rethink the guides & tip themselves. I personally would only use single foot, titanium framed (not plated), silicone carbide inserted guides and tip (I like Fuji's). They are the lightest ceramic guide and will allow you to get the most out of your blank. To go even lighter, the REC Recoil guides are an excellent choice. I personally prefer the ceramic guides even though they weigh a bit more than the Recoil's. Both are a great choice.
Have fun,
Todd
