Hi, was wondering what if any opinions you guys have on this method for preparing rod blanks to epoxy to. Seen it done and thought it looked quite impressive.

A grey Scothbrite pad is best for water break free surface, however coating with Epoxy is not the best method to add finish to a blank.Permagloss would be better.

I always make any surface that will be bonded (even inside of real seats) water break free. Read the article "Surface Preperation" by Ralph O'Quinn in the Library above.

I'm agree with Fred and Mike on this. I use a shotgun bore brush in a hand drill to scuff up the inside if reel seats and gray Scothbrite for blank.

You can make a Water-Break-Tool like the one shown in RodMaker. Split the end of a section of aluminum or steel rod and insert a length of Scotchbrite. The larger the diameter, the longer the piece of Scotchbrite should be. A snug fit, run through a reel seat just once or twice via a power drill and you're done.

Remember, clean the surface first, then scuff/scour, then apply the epoxy.
