Question about Marbling under a guide.

Got a question about some marbling under a guide. I am doing a double wrap so I will have my bottom therads down and I will have some CP on that. My question is what do most of you do in that situation?

Do you mark where your guide will be then start your marbling there or do you just do it and hope it comes out right?

I was going to do some red flames from my second wrap towards the center of the guide on my bottom wrap.

Some input would be helpful. Thank you in advance for the inputs.

You could just marble right on the blank, with some knowledge of where the open area between the feet will be. Then put down the guide and wrap it on top.

Well, I could do this but I need an underwrap fpr these guides. This is a big rod and I have heavy duty guides. It is a Offshore rod and I need the underwraps on it.

Make white underwraps and when you apply the finish, marble that in the way that you want.

"I am doing a double wrap so I will have my bottom therads down and I will have some CP on that. My question is what do most of you do in that situation?"

I've never done a double wrap. I "false wrap" by just wrapping up to the marbling with the single wrap. I guess I haven't thought about what I'd try in that situation. Probably do the underwrap and coat it with CP (if needed for color retention) or Permagloss (if no color retention is needed) and then do as below:

"Do you mark where your guide will be then start your marbling there or do you just do it and hope it comes out right?"

I mark it and then remove the guide and mask each end with Scotch tape, marble it and before it gets too set up, I remove the tape. I couldn't just put it put it on and hope it comes out right.

I then attach the guide, wrap up to the marbling and put a coat of finish over the whole works.

I like Scotch tape when masking for marbling because it doesn't "leak" under that little spot where the tape overlaps itself like the thicker tapes tend to do when they're used for masking.

Thanks Putter, again you have come through.

I did my marbling tonight before I got your message. I will put pictures here tomorrow after I put the guides on so you can see what I did. I was able to still leave the orange center wrap and then marble up to that and marble to just past where I am goping to have my upper threads. This is my first attempt at marbling under a guide, I hope it looks ok wth the upper wrap too. Guess I will see after the first coat tomorrow afternoon.

ok, this is what I ended up doing. It is my first marbling job. I left some of the black come through on the long one and it looked great when I left it, but as you know it changes some when I got back to it the next morning. It sill looks good, but not what I was expecting. This is rignt after I put on my first coat of Flex. Still got one more to go.

Thank you for the great compliments. I liked doind this, it was kind of fun, expecially not knowing how it was really going to turn out. I was ready with the alcohol to remove it if I did not like it. Now if I can just find some good tinting white.
