A neighbor brought his rod over and the tip is broken off right below the first guide. Can I just put a new tip top on there is about four inches sticking up from the next guide. Thanks in advance for all your help.

I have done this a few times with good results. I also use a sharp blade and have been able to save the wraps leading up to the tip and avoided having to match and re wrap.

You can do it but the rod will never be the same as it was before. Just make sure he knows it will be a different animal with that much gone off of it.

You can do it that way but it would be better and very impressive to your
neighbor do the right way.

remove the guide near the break area and splice the broken tip back on with
a small over-sleeve. If possible re wrap the guide back on OVER the repair
sleeve.

There is a very good article in the library section here by Ralph O'Quinn
regarding repairs. READ IT before deciding how you will proceed.
