I know this has been discussed many times. I'm not searching right to find it. If fishing a spinning reel with about 14# line what fly wt would be appropriate? I'm thinking a 8 or 9wt. Is that close?
Thanks, steve walters Never mind, I found the info in the archives. I knew it was there just had to get the right search. Later, steve walters Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/14/2007 01:29PM by steve walters. Re: fly rod to spinning reel

No, because fly line weight is weight. Mono line weight is break strength. The two do not correlate at all.
An 8 or 9 weight fly rod should be sufficient to cast about 1/2 to 3/4 quarter ounce lures. Re: fly rod to spinning reel

I think most saltwater fly anglers routinely use 10 and 12lb. tippet (maybe even slightly heavier) on their 9 and 10 wt. outfits without a problem. You just want to make sure that if you wrap the line on a guide or your reel seizes up, or you step on the line while a fish is running, that the tippet will break before your rod does.
