Drop Shot Hook Keeper

Drop Shot hook keeper

I have had a few people ask me how to make the hook keeper that I have been making for about 7 years, which I use on Drop Shot rods and some Catfish rods. About a year ago I posted some information on this but did not post any pictures at that time. I also sent this design to a couple of manufacturers a few years back to see if they would produce them.

I use the Jigging Spoon Form or CC-Form wire from “Do-it Molds”. You can make two hook keepers from one wire form. I cut the form wire in half then I use a pair of needle nose pliers to make the hook keeper. Measuring about 3 mm from the round end, bend at 90 degrees. Then measuring about 2 mm, bend at 90 degrees away from round end. Next, I measure about 10 mm then cut. You can adjust measurements to fit your needs. Once you get wire form the way you want, you can grind the ends at a bevel to flatten the end where the thread starts on the keeper. You can also take a hammer to flatten the feet of the hook keeper. Just be sure to file or use a sharpening stone to clean up rough and sharp edges so not to damage the thread when wrapping (same as preparing a guide).

I hope this helps if there are any questions please let me know.

That is a cool idea using jigging spoon form and you can bet I'll be ordering some the next time I place an order. Thanks for sharing it.

I looks like an exact copy of a Castaway/Kistler hookkeeper that are on all of Kistler's rods.

I know that Batson has this type of hook keeper available for their vendors. I sent them some of these 3 to 4 years ago.
I have been making this type of hook keeper for a long time and never seen anything like them until Kistler. But that makes no difference I am not trying to copy anyone’s product.
My intention was only to share some information.

Lynn,

I guess I should have added what a fine job you did! I didn't mean to hi-jack that on you. I just figured that a lot of people didn't know a production model was out there.
