I feel like this is a stupid question but I'm going to ask anyway. How far up the blank from the reel seat should the first guide be on a 9' 12wt? Also, is a 12 guide too small? The lay out I have now is 31" up the blank and it just seems like a bit much. That being said it's inline with my other fly rods?
Help, steve walters Re: 12wt first guide?

The first guide location is determined by the guide frame height, the diameter of the reel spool, the blank, size of other guides and the ring size. Your email address is Hidden on this site. I would use a high frame #16, like an SVSG. You'd want the stripping guide about 32 or 33 inches from the back of the reel seat. Don't figure the length of any fighting butt into this.
