Tips on Packing Wraps

Hey Everyone,

My first "official" wrap (one that was not on a dowel) was a two axis chevron, with a six color fade. It was relatively easy to keep the wrap packed, even though I had elongated it a good bit. But now, I'm working on an 8 axis fish scale and the difference in packing time is simply amazing. It seems I'm spending more time packing than I am actually wrapping. Is this par for the course ? I'll do one black to the left, two metallic gold to the right, then pack. I'll do one black to the left and three gold to the right, then pack.... but the packing process is excruciating compared to a two axis. Can you please share any ideas to make this easier ? Oh, and just FYI, I haven't gotten my birthday gift yet (magnifying head band) so I'm using a jewelers loop to keep track of what is happening.... painful to say the least.

Any help anyone could offer would be very appreciated.

Thanks, Jeff

It also appears that I might be putting too much pressure on my threads as well. When I woke up this morning, three threads had come loose and were just hanging. I'm using a thread bobbin and not applying any additional tension. Also, I'm not doing the tape fold-back technique, I'm actually using small pieces of 1/8" masking tape on each end. Could the threads being too tight cause some pain in packing as well ?

Also, does anyone use the invisible quilters thread for packing ?

Thanks, Jeff

Don't pack every single pass. Just pack towards the end of a wrap. A simple wrap like a Chevron I would only pack 2 times. On the Closed wraps I'm doing, I only pack 3 or 4 times for the entire wrap, adn once ar the end to tighten up points.

Less tension and more tape! I use 3/4" or 1" masking tape and reverse it, but i just got some double-sided and I like that too. Find that happy medium between too tight and too loose. How can I describe that? :)
