I have a couple question. When I spine my blank for a casting rod the traditional way is for the guides to be on top of the blank, now i'm going to spiral the guides to the bottom of the blank isn't that going to make my casting rod less stiff and more like a spinning rod, Maybe i'm missing something. My other question is Do I need some sort of tool to get the degree when I place my guides for the spiral, like a protractor or just figure ok that's 60, 120. I know 180. Help Please Thank you Steve Re: Spiral Wrap here we go again

Why would you put the spine on top of the blank? I had no idea that such a thing was "traditional."
Spine position has little to nothing do with casting. It's just not going to make any measurable difference. I would suggest building the rod on the straightest axis, put the belly down and the belly and tip "up." ................ Re: Spiral Wrap here we go again

I would forget the spine and build to the straightest asix. You might try a simple or bumper spiral Where all of the guides except the butt guide on on the 180 and then place a small low guide exactly between the butt guide and the first 180 at 90 degrees to keep the line off the blank. A very easy, effective method. Do a search for simple spiral or bumber spiral (ALL DATES) and you will get a TON of info Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Straightest axis is hard to beat. I would put it in either the fish fighting plane or the casting plane whichever you feel is more important. Probably won't make a huge difference either way though. Re: Spiral Wrap here we go again

Locate the spine if you can . Some stiffer rod blanks are hard to find it.
Then like Tom says check for a bend in it. If it is bent, put the curve ( upward ) Guides on bottom. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
