shelf life of rod building chemicals

Hello, I am new to this forum and have a question. I have been an inactive rod builder for the last couple of years. I build rods as a hobby and usually build rods for friends and relatives and occasionally myself. I have some U-40, Flexcoat and Gudebrod products such as Corkseal, rod bond and Permagloss along with color preserver and assorted rod finish. My question is Would it still be usable after two years of storage? Most of the products have not been opened. Any and all responses to this post will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jeff

You shouldn't have problems with any of those as long as they haven't been in really cold storage temperatures. The epoxies like to wax up if stored cool. You'll see it in the (can't remember which bottle, but one of them) on the bottom of the bottle if it's happened. A few 5 second bursts in the microwave with the top off the bottle for safety cures that if it's happened.

Same with the cork preserver; a bit of a nuke has straightened out really old stuff for me and made it re-useable again.

The Permagloss should be fine if it wasn't opened. It hardens with the moisture in the air; the more humid, the quicker it cures. If it kept it's seal, should be fine. You'll know when you go to use it.

i believe its the resin that gets the crystals and you have to nuke it for a few seconds...or so ive read from previous posts here

my flexcote resin formed crystals so last night i put the bottle in a pot of warm water and let it cool back to room temp in the water and it came back clear

The only product that can be ruined by very cold temps is color preserver. Once it goes solid, it's done. Time to buy more. Generally anything below freezing will do it in.

After re-heating the resin we've found that the pot-life of some of the epoxies is a bit shorter.

Kept at an ambient temp around 70deg or higher, most of this stuff will last almost forever. Once opened, though, some of the stuff will form a skin at the top of the remainder in the bottle. Be careful not to get the brush filled wsith the skin.

The screw-can is the best way to keep Permagloss. Now that you've asked, I wonder if that trick works with other stuff, too?
